Surgical and conservative Ophthalmology

The Doctor offers advanced surgical and conservative treatments for a wide range of eye conditions ensuring a professional solution to your problem.

  • At Canthus, cataract surgery is performed using the advanced phacoemulsification method, where the cloudy lens is emulsified with ultrasound and replaced with a clear artificial lens (intraocular lens - IOL). At Canthus, we provide comprehensive care to our patients before, during, and after cataract surgery to ensure the best outcomes.

    Prior to surgery, a thorough examination is conducted, including precise lens calculations using the Aladdin Biometry Device, customized to the needs of every patient independently.

    The surgery is performed in an approved and well-equipped medical centre, ensuring the highest safety and comfort standards.

    After the procedure, we offer personalized follow-up care, including post-operative examinations, tailored therapy, protective bandages and covers for the eye, and final exams to prescribe glasses for optimal vision correction.

    This minimally invasive procedure ensures quick recovery and significantly improved vision.

    All cataract operations are exclusively performed by Dr. Chamalis, ensuring the highest level of care and expertise.

  • At Canthus, we use Optic Nerve OCT and retinal Ganglion Cell Complex analysis to assess the damage caused by glaucoma and even detect the disease at its earliest stages. These examinations can also reveal changes in cases of normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Using the Octopus Perimeter, we monitor the visual fields to track the progression of glaucoma.

    Therapeutically, we can lower intraocular pressure using eye drop therapy, but we can also treat it surgically by performing YAG Laser-Iridotomy in cases of angle-closure glaucoma.

    Furthermore, to lower the intraocular pressure, we can implant a drainage device that connects the anterior chamber with the subtenon space (XEN-Gel-Implant), known as Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS).

    Glaucoma can also be treated surgically with other MIGS devices, as well as with Cyclophotocoagulation or selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT).

    Additionally, the Trabectome procedure removes part of the trabecular meshwork to reduce eye pressure and can be performed simultaneously with cataract surgery, providing an optimal solution for patients with glaucoma.

  • Our medical retina services cover the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein or artery occlusions. Using OCT and OCT-Angiography technologies, we provide in-depth retinal assessments. Treatments include anti-VEGF injections, laser photocoagulation, and comprehensive follow-up care to preserve your vision.

    Pigmentary epithelium disturbances and hereditary retinal conditions can be diagnosed and monitored with the help of Autofluorescence or Fluorescence Angiography using our Triton OCT Device.

  • We offer specialized laser treatments such as YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification (PCO) following cataract surgery and YAG laser iridotomy for angle-closure glaucoma. ARGON laser treatments are used to manage retinal tears, diabetic retinopathy, and other retinal conditions, providing non-invasive solutions to common eye problems.

  • Our ocular surface procedures include the removal of Pterygium using the autologous conjunctival transplant technique to reduce the risk of recurrence.

    We also remove benign or malignant conjunctival lesions, loosen symblepharon in cases of ocular pemphigoid, and perform surgical care of traumatic corneal lacerations or removal of intracorneal foreign bodies.

Plastic and Reconstructive
Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Chamalis specializes in advanced plastic and reconstructive eyelid surgeries, offering comprehensive solutions to improve both the appearance and function of the eyelids.

  • Dr. Chamalis views the eyelid and brow as a unified structure, correcting both when necessary. For cases of brow ptosis or brow fat pad descent, he performs brow fat pad repositioning with special stitches, internal brow lifts, or direct brow lifts. The correction of steatoblepharon (lower eyelid bags) can be achieved through scarless blepharoplasty (with incisions from the inside), transcutaneous blepharoplasty, and can be combined with fat transposition to the tear trough for cases of tear trough deformity. These techniques rejuvenate the eyes, giving patients a fresher and more youthful appearance.

    For lower eyelid laxity, he uses open or closed canthopexy or canthoplasty in severe cases to prevent lower eyelid retraction—a devastating complication.

    Dr. Chamalis also offers revision surgeries for patients who have undergone complicated or unsuccessful eyelid surgeries elsewhere, such as addressing lower eyelid retraction after previous blepharoplasty.

  • The Doctor offers surgical correction for Ptosis (droopy eyelid), using both the transcutaneous method and a scarless method known as Müller Muscle Resection (MMCR), with incisions made on the back side of the upper eyelid. In cases where the levator muscle is non-functional, such as in congenital or traumatic ptosis, Dr. Chamalis performs a frontalis muscle suspension to restore the eyelid's appearance and function.

  • Dr. Chamalis offers surgical correction for entropion (inward rolling of the eyelid) and ectropion (outward rolling of the eyelid) using various methods, predominantly the lateral canthal sling. These conditions can cause significant discomfort and visual impairment if left untreated.

  • For patients with floppy eyelid syndrome, Dr. Chamalis offers precise assessment and surgical correction, improving both comfort and function.

  • These conditions, where the eyelashes grow abnormally and irritate the eye, are treated using cryotherapy, electroepilation or lid splitting.

  • Dr. Chamalis is skilled in the removal of benign or malignant eyelid tumors, ensuring the continuity of the eyelid is restored using plastic surgery techniques, including Hughes Plastic, rhombus flap, or glabella flap, depending on the needs of the patient.

  • We offer treatments for blocked tear ducts and other lacrimal system disorders, including lacrimal pathways probing and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) in cooperation with an ENT colleague. We also perform punctum plug insertions and reconstruction of lacerated lacrimal ducts using a pig-tail probe or ring intubation.

    Botulinum toxin is indicated for use in the masseter muscles in cases of bruxism (teeth grinding during sleep). It relaxes the overactivity of the masseter muscles, thereby relieving headaches and protecting your teeth.

    Botulinum toxin is also applied in cases of hyperhidrosis in the underarm area, especially during the summer months, freeing you from unpleasant sweat stains on your clothes.

  • Restore volume and fullness to the cheeks, lips, under-eye areas, temples or A-deformity of the upper eye lid providing natural-looking enhancements. The treatment of each area requires a different material, ensuring that the injected filler is firm enough or elastic enough to seamlessly enhance your facial features.

  • Hydrate and rejuvenate the skin, leaving it looking radiant and youthful. Skin boosters increase the production of collagen in the skin, by activating special cells called fibroblasts, resulting to a long lasting improvement of the firmness of the skin.
